Our team recently completed another large scale renovation and extension on a period home in East Maitland. The older style home was completely transformed to meet the young families needs.
The renovation and extension building works on this project comprised of a large rear extension to create more living space for the family, a new kitchen complete with butlers pantry, an additional family room, a remodelled master bedroom to include a walk in robe and ensuite, a study, storeroom, new carport and a large covered deck.
When working on period homes we always admire the craftsmanship and detail that has gone into creating the original home. Hicks Plastering did a fantastic job creating the new ornate arches in this home. The first thing you notice when you step inside this beautiful home is a gorgeous feature archway.
New Kitchen
The home owners opted for a striking cobalt blue tone from Berger called Blue Dimension for the island bench cabinetry. The blue adds some character to the room and immediately commands your attention.
For the cabinetry, the owners chose 2 pack polyurethane shaker style door cabinets painted in Dulux Natural White. Overhead cupboards with clear glass were included and the glass pendant lights installed above the island bench were the perfect choice to complete the space.
The stylish textured kitchen splashback almost resembles the look of pressed metal, but it’s actually a tile from Southern Cross Ceramics, Infinity range. This style of tile is great for period homes and comes in a range of different patterns and 36 different colours. The 300 x 600 tile used on this project is called Richmond and the colour selected was Panama.
The decision to use a different benchtop product along the rear wall works really well with the blue tones and adds some warmth to the room. The generous sized island benchtop is called Symphony Grey from the Caesar Stone range.
Quality appliances and tapware were installed right throughout the home. The rangehood and 70cm duel fuel freestanding upright oven are both from Smeg and the tapware and sinks are from Oliveri. The kitchen sink tap you see featured in this home is a square gooseneck tap in stainless steel.
New Laundry
This brand new laundry features the same white cabinetry, door hardware and timber look benchtop as the kitchen. Using the same products in both rooms creates a lovely consistent flow throughout the home.
The laundry features a drop in stainless steel sink, a chrome mixer tap, a tall broom cupboard, some open shelving, overhead cupboards and a handy hanging rack. The white subway brick style tile is a great option for the splashback and works well with the cabinets.
Exterior Product Selections
The exterior of the home is clad in weatherboards in keeping with the period of the home and a new colourbond roof and guttering were installed.
Main Bathroom
The main bathroom features a gorgeous original leadlight window and the same white subway wall tiles that were used on the laundry splashback. There’s plenty of storage space for the family with the shaving cabinet mirrors installed above the vanity.
A stone benchtop with an above counter round basin and mixer tap adds a modern touch to the room. The vanity ties the modern and more traditional features of the room in together beautifully.
Ensuite Bathroom
The ensuite bathroom required us to get very creative when it came to fitting in a toilet. We had to modify an existing chimney to accept the new toilet position.
The grey and white print feature tile chosen for the ensuite bathroom is called Tangier in 200 x 200 size tiles and a handy wall niche was also added to the shower area. White subway tiles were used for the remaining walls with chrome tapware and fixtures.
Flooring
Turpentine hard wearing timber was chosen for the flooring. Turpentine hardwood is a hardy Australian timber displaying rich brown and red tones. The timber is often selected for flooring due to it’s durability.
Timber Deck
The outdoor timber spotted gum deck is a great addition to the home. The large covered space will most definitely be well utilised over the coming years.
The gable roof structure with it’s exposed beams and height really does make this space look grand. To cater for the warmer months, the home owners opted to install a black outdoor fan to ensure that the space can be used comfortably year round.
Timber feature upright posts are a nice contrast against the grey weatherboards and white trim. The choice of black and clear glass exterior light fittings also work very well with the style of this home.
